Ralph Stiver Killed in Motorcycle Accident on FM 685 in Pflugerville, TX

UPDATE (May 4, 2022): Sources have identified the rider killed in this accident as 29-year-old Ralph Stiver.

Pflugerville, TX -- April 9, 2022, a motorcycle rider was killed in a collision with a car on the State Highway 130 frontage road in Pflugerville.

Authorities say the incident happened around 1:05 a.m. at the intersection of the frontage road (FM 685) and Kelly Lane. Preliminary investigation suggests only that the victim was riding a Kawasaki motorcycle north on the frontage road in the right lane when he allegedly ran a red light at Kelly and crashed into an eastbound car in the crossroads. Witnesses reportedly confirmed that eastbound traffic had a green light at the time.

The motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene. The other driver was unhurt.

The investigation is ongoing. No further information is available at this time.

Commentary on Ralph Stiver Accident on FM 685 in Pflugerville

It's not clear exactly what happened here, but accidents like this are often more complex than folks may realize. Put simply, motorcyclists have to endure a lot of harmful misconceptions about them and their choice of vehicle. Without a full investigation into the Pflugerville crash it may be far too easy for people to just assume the rider was somehow acting reckless. It can be all too easy for folks to point fingers at motorcyclists based solely on certain misconceptions about them.

Don't get me wrong: I'm not exactly arguing with the documented police findings here. If they're right then the victim may have been speeding and may even have run a red light. Motorcyclists can make unfortunate choices just like any other kind of driver. The problem lies more with deciding those things before the facts have a chance to say one way or the other. I don't mean to suggest the witness is unreliable, but personal observation is no match for objective evidence like scene reconstruction or video from a traffic camera.

Maybe authorities are giving this incident the careful attention it deserves, but in my experience it often takes more thorough independent investigations to ensure a motorcyclist's loved ones gets the answers they need. Closer examination by a trained expert might just confirm the explanation currently reported by police, but only after the job is done right can anyone say for sure.
