Commentary on Log Truck Accident on State Route 530 in Snohomish County
It's not entirely unusual for there to be so few details about what happened here. A commercial truck wreck can be incredibly complex, especially if the investigators don't have the right tools and training to handle things. I don't mean to suggest anyone here is unable to do their jobs. It's simply that over 30 years and hundreds of commercial vehicle wrecks, I've lost count of how many times police investigations overlooked something crucial.
That's one of the reasons that thorough independent investigations are so important. They can catch crucial details that would otherwise slip through the cracks. Take for example a crossover wreck a family came to me with a while back. Police put their loved one at fault for crossing the center line. After independent investigations, however, evidence made it clear that the investigating officer completely misinterpreted the details surrounding the crash. It was actually the truck involved that crossed over. The victim veered left to avoid it, but the truck then veered back into its original lane where the vehicles collided.
I'm not saying that happened here, but failing to ensure the right people are looking into the crash can result in similar mistakes. For folks in serious need of help, any effort to make sure they have all the facts is effort worth making.
