Commentary on Dump Truck Accident on Sand Island Access Road in Honolulu

After tire blowouts, folks tend to just think everything was unavoidable, and that's that. This can certainly be true, considering these accidents often involve something puncturing the tire. But other factors to consider may not be so simple. One other common factor is poor maintenance. If a tire reconstruction shows that the truck's owner, whether that's an individual or a company, failed to replace worn tires, that can predictably lead to a blowout. As such, that evidence would likely lead to them being liable for the resulting injuries.

That said, while far less common, there also should be an investigation into the possibility of a tire defect. While relatively rare, manufacturing issues can lead to tires failing despite being apparently used appropriately. Not only would that require holding the manufacturer accountable for their mistake, but it could also be important to bring the issue to light in case others are in danger of being involved in a similar accident.

That's one of the reasons that I so frequently advocate for independent investigations from professionals. Authorities don't always have the specific tools and training for something as intricate as tire reconstruction. Making sure victims and families know they're getting all the facts should be a priority following any serious truck wreck. I see no reason why this crash would be an exception to that.
