Victorville, CA -- February 1, 2022, a 68-year-old man was seriously injured after crashing into the rear of a semi-truck on D Street in Victorville.

Authorities say the incident happened around 12:45 p.m. on the 16300 block of D Street near the 15 Freeway. Preliminary investigation suggests only that the victim was driving a vintage Dodge pickup on the roadway when he collided with the rear of a commercial semi-truck.

The man was trapped in his pickup until firefighters extricated him. He was then airlifted to an area hospital for treatment of serious injuries.

The crash remains under investigation. No further information is currently available.

Commentary on Truck Accident on D Street in Victorville

News reports provide a rough sketch of what happened on D Street, but don't or can't really say why things went that way. Why did the pickup hit the semi-truck? How fast were both vehicles moving, or was the semi stopped? If the latter, did the truck driver brake suddenly or gradually--or was the truck stopped in the road before the pickup arrived? Were the Dodge's brakes and steering working properly? Could it have had any other issues that might have prevented it from slowing or stopping effectively? Did its airbags activate properly during the collision? Was the victim distracted? Tired? Could they have been incapacitated by some kind of medical issue?

These questions and many others need answers before anyone can accurately say what happened, but looking into those extenuating factors isn't about complicating things or disputing the findings of law enforcement. The simple fact of the matter is unusual things happen in traffic accidents all the time. Anyone hurt in a crash deserves the benefit of the doubt unless objective facts determine they were at fault. Once there's been a full and proper investigation, the evidence will have the final say on what caused the wreck and who should be held responsible for the victim's injuries.
