Right now, the exact cause of the crash remains unclear. Police said only that a GMC Yukon and a dump truck crashed head-on after one of the vehicles crossed the center line. A pickup then crashed trying to avoid those vehicles.

Due to the collision, the Simi Valley man driving the SUV sustained fatal injuries. The other two drivers had reportedly minor injuries.

It's not too unusual for initial re[ports about a complex truck wreck not to tell all the details. It takes serious attention and skill to make sure nothing important slipped through the cracks. But while the instinct to wait for police to get all the facts may be prudent, the reality is a deadly truck wreck may require even more thorough efforts. Police on their own may not have the resources to get the whole story.

I don't mean for that to sound like I'm criticizing the police as a whole. It's simply that I've dealt with countless situations where the full story only came to light because independent investigators caught something authorities missed. For example, a family came to me about a crash similar to the one in these reports, only the police reports put the victim 100% at fault. They said the victim crossed the center line and hit an 18-wheeler. We looked into things, prepared to simply confirm what police already said. However, investigations found that the police got the facts wrong.

The evidence actually showed that the 18-wheeler crossed the center line first, then the victim swerved left to avoid it. That's when the 18-wheeler veered back into its original lane, causing the collision. Had there not been more thorough investigations, who knows if the family ever would have learned the truth about what happened. Maybe nothing like that will happen here, but I fail to see why anyone would wait around to find out when they can take steps to ensure they're getting the full story.
