Commentary on School Bus, Train Accident in Bloomfield Township

Obviously it's important to continue investigations and find out how this all happened. In the meantime, it does offer some encouragement that injuries were reportedly minor. I sincerely hope that's true, but it's important not to let that make things seem like no big deal.

I've had plenty of families come to me after a crash where things seemed "minor" only for the injuries to prove more serious later on. Injuries can affect adolescents and children in different ways compared to how adults handle them. If problems arise later on, and families didn't take steps to get evidence while it was still intact, they could find themselves in serious need of help without the tools to get it.

I don't say any of this to scare anyone or to be pessimistic. If reports say the kids only had minor injuries, that's probably true, and I truly hope it is. However, my career taught me it always helps to err on the side of caution, especially when it comes to the well-being of children.
