Renaldo Archibold Injured in 18-Wheeler Accident on FM 1516 in Bexar County, TX

Bexar County, TX -- December 28, 2021, 77-year-old Renaldo Archibold was injured in a collision with a commercial truck on Farm to Market Road 1516 in Bexar County.

Authorities say the incident happened around 9:35 p.m. on FM 1516 near Interstate 10. Preliminary investigation suggests a Freightliner semi-truck with an attached trailer was traveling south on the roadway and reportedly began to make a left turn into a private drive. The truck driver allegedly told police he didn't see any approaching headlights before turning.

The truck was almost out of the roadway when Archibold approached in a Honda Accord and collided with the rear right corner of the commercial trailer.

Archibold suffered serious injuries in the collision. The truck driver reportedly refused medical attention.

No further information is available at this time.

Commentary on Renaldo Archibold Accident on FM 1516 in Bexar County

Reports suggest the commercial driver failed to yield to an approaching vehicle and turned into its path. This happens quite a lot, unfortunately, and is often the result of the trucker not paying careful attention to his surroundings before turning. Of course the driver seems to have a different point of view here and told investigators he couldn't see any headlights approaching. That may have been the case if the victim's lights weren't on or the truck driver may simply have been laying some groundwork for defense down the road, but either way it seems that straight from the get-go he--and by extension his employer--won't readily accept responsibility.

I often have to tell people who call the firm that they can't rely on the observations in a police report to make a trucking company do the right thing. While it can be easy to fall into the trap of thinking those reports are the first and final word on the matter, companies dispute them all the time. To escape liability they'll argue environmental factors, bad road design or condition, or (as we see here) even the victims themselves are truly to blame. That's why it's so important to carefully investigate these matters and eliminate any "wiggle room" they might have. Armed with abundant clear evidence, many people injured by a trucker's carelessness have successfully sought help through injury claims. Those who felt the situation was self-evident or that police reports would be enough to do the same are often disappointed.
