Commentary on FedEx Truck Accident on I-294 in Alsip
With a crash like this, it's important to really take into account how little the reports really say. If a truck hits a semi-trailer along an interstate, folks may think it's simply because the truck driver was being reckless and lost control of their vehicle. That is very possible, and I wouldn't rule that out without clear evidence. At the same time, there are alternative explanations to why a truck would suddenly veer to the side of the road.
Were there sudden mechanical issues? Does the driver's employer maintain their fleet properly? Did a tire blow out? Did the driver suffer a medical emergency? Were they swerving to avoid another reckless driver? Was the semi-trailer fully on the shoulder, or was it protruding into the lane of travel? Even if the driver did do something wrong, were there defects with safety equipment that made the crash more severe than it otherwise would have been?
Not all of these questions involve factors that are common, but they're all important. The issue is authorities don't often look into all of these possible factors. That's one of the reasons I always advocate for more thorough independent investigations, and I don't see why this crash would be an exception to that.
