Six Injured in Multi-Vehicle, Guardrail Crash on I-10 in Vidor, TX

Vidor, TX -- August 7, 2021, a Louisiana family of six was injured in a three-vehicle accident on Interstate 10 in Texas' Golden Triangle region.

Authorities say the incident occurred around 2:30 a.m. on eastbound I-10. Preliminary investigation suggests the family was traveling back to New Orleans from Houston when the driver reportedly fell asleep at the wheel. The vehicle drifted into a nearby guardrail, which impaled the cabin and narrowly missed the occupants within. After the car was skewered by the guardrail it was struck by two other eastbound vehicles.

Local firefighters spent an hour extricating one of the vehicle's occupants and all six of the family members were transported to a Beaumont hospital for treatment of various injuries. No one in the other two vehicles was injured.

No further information is available at this time.

Commentary on Three-Vehicle Accident on I-10 in Vidor

If the news has its facts straight this sounds like a terrifying ordeal for the family in that car. I'm sorry to learn they were hurt even as I'm relieved that the guardrail that entered their vehicle didn't manage to catch anyone on its way through.

Based on the reported details of the incident I'm having a little trouble figuring out why the family's vehicle was hit by two others if it drifted out of the travel lane into the rail, but I will be the first to say I wasn't there and am unlikely to have a full grasp of the situation right away. I do hope the investigating officials can make proper sense out of the chaos that apparently unfolded on I-10, though, as it's important to know every available detail.

Until more facts are uncovered, I would also discourage anyone from jumping to any conclusions about the nature of this wreck. The most important thing to do right now is make sure that professionals with the right forensic training and the proper equipment look closely at this incident to connect all its dots. Those injured in the crash deserve no less than a full and thorough investigation on their behalf--both to determine precisely what happened and also to learn if any parties should be held accountable for worsening what was already a dire situation.
