Candi Sue Stilts Injured in Car Accident on Sealy Road in San Felipe, TX

San Felipe, TX -- April 6, 2021, 41-year-old Candi Sue Stilts was seriously injured in a single-vehicle crash on Sealy Road in San Felipe.

Authorities say the incident happened around 10:30 p.m. at the intersection of Sealy and Baron de Bastrop Street. Preliminary investigation suggests Stilts was driving a Dodge Challenger southeast on the roadway when she approached a left-hand curve near Baron de Bastrop. The Challenger exited the roadway in the curve, passing out of the travel lanes and driving through the ditch into a heavily-wooded area. The car traveled into the woods approximately 50-75 yards before colliding with a tree.

Stilts suffered serious injuries in the crash and was taken to an area hospital.

Investigators noted a belief that Stilts was drinking alcohol before the crash and cited her for DWI.

No further information is currently available.

Commentary on Candi Sue Stilts Accident on Sealy Rd in San Felipe

I'm not here to judge anyone, and I know better than to take reports like this entirely at face value. For all we know there could still be extenuating circumstances here that police overlooked. Even if alcohol was a factor, though, there may still be important factors to consider. For instance, did police look into where it came from?

Here in Texas, alcohol providers can be liable for crashes their wares may have caused. If evidence shows that an establishment over-served someone who was obviously intoxicated, and that intoxication then causes an accident, those injured in the crash--even the drivers themselves--may be able to hold the alcohol provider responsible.

Despite the obvious utility of those laws--know as dram shop laws--to injured victims, I find too often that authorities don't even bother considering the possibility that a bar or store broke the law with reckless over-service. Are they being more thorough here, or should there be an independent investigation to get some answers?
