Madison, MS — September 11, 2017, at least one person was injured following an accident where multiple vehicles, including an 18-wheeler, crashed on I-55.
Officials from the Madison County Sheriff’s Department were called out to the scene just after 9:00 a.m. They say it happened near the Highway 463 exit of southbound I-55.
Investigators reported that a ladder was in the middle of the highway, and multiple drivers had to swerve to avoid it. At some point, for reasons still unclear, multiple vehicles, including an 18-wheeler, crashed into each other.
The driver of a pickup involved in the crash was ejected from their vehicle as a result. That person was transported to a hospital with unspecified injuries. It’s unclear if anyone else was injured.
Police say that the factors surrounding the accident are still under investigation.
Map of the Area
Some people may see fit to blame the ladder in the roadway for this accident, and it would certainly be reasonable to do so. However, I’d like to stress that other possible factors shouldn’t be overlooked simply because there’s a seemingly obvious cause. There were multiple vehicles involved here, and it’s entirely possible one of those vehicles reacted poorly to the situation and caused the pile-up. I can’t say for sure what other factors might be involved without more details, but considering one of the drivers was ejected from their vehicle–which in most cases means serious injuries–there needs to be a thorough investigation here to ensure every effort is made to assist that driver. Whatever steps are taken after the truth comes to light, that journey can’t be made until all of the evidence surrounding the crash is properly examined by a professional.
