Penelope Raines dies in head on collision
Early in
the morning on April 7, 2008, 61-year-old Penelope Raines was killed in a car accident in Sherman, TX. As she was driving her son to
school Raines' vehicle was struck head on by another car after it crossed the
median that divided the opposite directions of traffic.
At the time of the accident Raines was transporting her 7-year-old grandson, Nicholas Bailey, to school. He was injured in the
accident and rushed to Children's Hospital in Dallas by air ambulance. He has had
several surgeries and he is currently in intensive care.
Jeremy Sanders, the driver of the other car, was taken to the hospital with
minor injuries. Police have charged Sanders with negligent homicide.
A note from E. Michael Grossman:
I wonder how long it will take before a proper barrier is installed along this
section of 75. About four years ago 10 people died in a single accident when an
18-wheeler crossed this median and completely demolished two vehicles. I can
recall at least two other instances where an accident occurred after someone
crossed the median. A concrete barrier was eventually installed a few miles
south of there but apparently it is necessary to extend that barrier further
north. I wish the best for little Nicholas and I hope he makes a full recovery.
