16-year-old Autumn Link killed in car accident
16-year-old Autumn Link of Clyde, TX was killed in southeast Jones County when a the vehicle she was a passenger in flipped over causing her to be ejected from the vehicle. The accident occured when the driver of the vehicle, 19-year-old Alicia Reed of Abilene, failed to stop and hit a utility pole. Two other passengers, Garret Massey, 17, and Ahsley Reed, 16, were both taken to Hendrick Medical center for treatment of their injuries. According to the Department of Public Safety none of the occupanst of the vehicle were wearing seatbelts.
A note from E. Michael Grossman:
There is a lot to be said for personal accountability and certainly the outcome may have been considerably better had Autumn Link elected to wear a seatbelt. However, the driver of the vehicle is ultimately responsible for ensuring the safety of the passengers especially when all of the passengers are minors. As the driver of a vehicle you must always insist that your passengers employ required safety devices as it is ultimately your responsibility.
