Bad weather results in multiple accidents
The Moore County Sherrifs Department reports large number of wrecks on February 5, 2008 including a double fatality. The officers site harsh weather as the source of the increase in activity. They claim that at one point they worked eight wrecks within an hour and a half the most tragic of which was a one vehicle roll over in which a van lost control and rolled over killing two occupants of the van and injuring others.
A note from E. Michael Grossman:
It is improtant to remember that bad weather is not an excuse for bad driving. In extreme weather conditions you are still responsible for maintaining control of your vehicle and obeying all conventional traffic laws. It is a common misocnception that an accident that features harsh weather is caused by the weather itself and that the conditions somehow aleviate the fault of the person who causes the accident. This is not the case. This story is truly tragic and you can't help but wonder how the driving habits of others on the road may have contributed to the van's accident. My best wishes go out to the families of those injured during these events.
