Sabinsa worker Mauricio Lacayo dead following L-Selenomethionine inhalation or exposure
29-year-old Mauricio Lacayo died on January 19th, 2010 after telling his wife that he'd become sick while working at the Sabinsa facility in Payson, Utah earlier in the day. Investigation continues into whether the substance that Lacayo was working with, actually caused his death. The substance in question was called L-selenomethionine; often found in multivitamin pills. Company officials released a statement stating that "The substances he worked with are all natural ingredients, none of which are toxic or dangerous." The Utah Occupational Safety and Health is not so sure that the substance is harmless, and is conducting an investigation of their own. Official cause of death is undetermined until an autopsy is performed.
Mr. Lacayo lost his life in a work-related death, possibly due to a toxic exposure of L-selenomethionine. Until the investigation is concluded, we can not know for sure why Mr. Lacayo died that day. If, when the investigation is over, it is found that safety practices and protocols were not followed correctly, then the employer may be held liable in this man's death. There are many factors that can change the potential outcome of a case such as this. Was the victim an employee or a contract worker? Does the company subscribe to workers' compensation insurance or not? For your greatest chance at successfully recovering appropriate compensation for your family's loss, you need to discuss your situation with a wrongful death attorney. You need someone to stick up for you, and fight for the compensation you deserve!
