Steel mill worker Michael Kies killed in steam explosion, 4 other workers injured
An explosion at Beta Steel Corporation's steel mill in Portage, Indiana killed one worker and injured four others. Michael Kies, 35, died from "multiple blunt force trauma to the head" caused by the explosion on January 7th, 2010. The four unnamed injured workers allegedly sustained non-life threatening injuries including steam burns and blunt force trauma. The explosion was said to have occurred after water was combined with molten slag in one of the furnaces. The mill was also the scene of an explosion in November 2009 which injured eight employees. OSHA is investigating the Beta Steel steam explosion.
While steel mills are not the safest of work environments, their employees are still entitled to a safe workplace. The fact that there have been two explosions at this mill within a couple of months tells me that the current safety precautions and protocols are inadequate, or not enough is being done to prevent job site injuries to the employees. If you or a loved one have been injured or killed while on the job, speak with a workplace accident injury attorney or wrongful death attorney right away. An attorney will be there fighting for you, making sure you get the financial compensation you deserve.
