Valdosta, GA — There were two accidents along Highway 84 on Sunday night, police said, that left a total of two people killed and two more injured. Local resident Ashokkumar Patel, 69, was killed in the accident, but no other names were released.
According to the reports, Patel was driving his semi-truck east along Highway 84 near James Road – southwest of Valdosta – when he was in an accident with a white car. The wreck resulted in both Patel’s semi-truck and the white car being disabled in the roadway. A witness to the accident happened to be a nurse, police said, and she came over to help Patel and the other driver.
As the nurse was helping Patel, another semi-truck and two more cars came upon the scene and caused a major pileup accident. Patel and the nurse were both killed in the accident and two more people were injured.
Police said they aren’t sure how the second wreck happened, but believe that the vehicles weren’t able to brake in time.
Scene of the Accident
Though the second accident was caused in part by the first accident, that doesn’t excuse the fact that the other drivers should have slowed down in time. As we’re all aware, every driver is responsible for maintaining a safe speed and following at a safe distance so you can brake in case of an emergency. Again, I can see someone arguing that if the first accident had not happened, the second wouldn’t have happened either. But that’s not really a good excuse for failing to slow down in time, is it?
