BP PLC, Europe's second-largest oil company, settled claims by eight workers injured in a 2005 Texas refinery blast, ending a trial that may have led to a $1 billion (U.S.) punitive-damages award.
The terms were confidential.
BP has said it exhausted a $1.6 billion fund created to resolve more than 4,000 blast-related claims. The London-based company, which has settled all wrongful death claims and most of the serious injury claims stemming from the explosion, still faces more than 1,200 explosion lawsuits.
BP settled three previous trials either during jury selection or before jurors finished hearing evidence.
The latest settlement comes after the former head of the Texas agency that regulates industrial emissions testified BP submitted deceptive information to obtain air-pollution permits covering the unit that exploded. BP has claimed it never intentionally submitted incorrect information
