Dik Van Meerten Killed, Sarah Lee Parker Hurt in Pedestrian Accident in Austin, Texas
According to KXAN, one person was killed and another injured in a pedestrian accident involving an alleged intoxicated driver in Austin, Texas. The wreck occurred around 7 p.m. Sunday, February 19 when Austin police believe 59-year-old Linda Dianne Woodman struck a parked car on Guadalupe, struck a bus stop, and then hit a light pole and dry cleaners sign. Woodman's SUV struck two people, killing 61-year-old Dik Van Meerten and injuring 21-year-old Sarah Lee Parker. Parker was taken to UMC Brackenridge in stable condition. A drug-recognition expert believes the drivers intoxication was not from alcohol, but rather a depressant and a narcotic analgesic.
Commentary For those who are not familiar, an analgesic is the medical term for a painkiller. I would assume most of my readers are aware of the dangers of driving while under the influence of alcohol, but the problems associated with driving while on prescription-strength medication are just as alarming. It should be noted, that until a tox screen comes back proving that the woman was intoxicated these are just allegations, but their effects are incredibly relevant in making a negligence determination. You see, intoxicated drivers automatically incur fault because of their impairment on the roadway. This fault could form the basis of a wrongful death or personal injury suit.

I was inside Wheatsville food co-op when this happened...the crime seen was violent and gruesome. This woman needs to be imprisoned and perhaps given years of rehabilitation treatment. She was issued a DWI charge in 2009 but the courts dismissed it to a lower crime of "obstruction of highway passageway". Someone, please pursue this case to make sure that Woodman never takes an innocent life in such a sickening way again.
