Elisabeth Arechar Killed in Rollover Accident in Southwest Dallas, Texas
Local reports from KDFW indicate a woman was killed in a rollover accident in southwest Dallas, Texas. The wreck occurred shortly after midnight, Wednesday February 15 when the unidentified woman struck a curb on Red Bird Lane. The woman's SUV traveled roughly 100 feet before it rolled several times, ejecting her from the car. She was pronounced dead at the scene. So far, investigators believe speed to be the primary factor in the accident.
Commentary With very little details regarding the accident, it would be prudent to conduct an independent investigation into the accident's cause. From the picture in the news, it would appear this woman was driving a Ford Explorer. Some of you may recall in the past, a lot of scrutiny was directed at Ford regarding the Explorer's propensity for a rollover. Most think of the early 2000s episode that was tied to Firestone tires, but recently the design of Explorers have come into question as well. In fact, in 2005 the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety found that the early model Explorers made between 1999 and 2002 had the 4th highest rate of driver death on the SUV market. This was due, in part, to their very low rollover rating. I say all of this, not to explain the accident (because the details do not support any cause currently), but rather to explain what contingencies go into properly investigating an accident, and especially one that turns fatal.
Update: The vehicle in question was a Mercury SUV, manufactured by Ford.
