Vic Edmond Killed in Hit-and-Run Accident in east Dallas, Texas
Local news stories indicate a man was killed in a hit-and-run collision
in east Dallas, Texas. The accident occurred Friday, December 23 when
Dallas police believe 24-year-old Max Navarrete ran a red light at
Samuel Boulevard and St. Francis Avenue and struck 52-year-old Vic
Edmond. The victim died two days later. Navarrete was later arrested the
following week.
Commentary Hit-and-run accidents are particularly troubling incidents
because they elongate what is already an arduous and painful process.
Thankfully the police caught the driver shortly after the accident. In
matters like these, a third party should inspect the vehicle in
question, as key evidence may have been tampered with during the search
for the driver. The inspection would then help to corroborate liability
and provide survivors with an idea of what civil remedies are available.
If the news reports are accurate and the driver ran a red
light and struck the pedestrian, that could meet the threshold of
negligence, a key factor in determining standing in a wrongful death
claim. Other factors necessary include a victim having survivors who are
allowed under Texas law to bring a claim on their behalf, and they must
be able to prove a loss of finances from the accident. A successful
claim can compensate survivors regarding damages like pain and
suffering, medical bills incurred before death, loss of financial
support the victim provided, or loss of consortium.
