Colin Stone Killed in Car Accident in Dallas, Texas
According to the Dallas Morning News, a teenaged man was killed in a car
accident in Dallas, Texas. The wreck occurred around 8:45 p.m. Tuesday,
November 29 when Dallas police believe 16-year-old Colin Stone was
involved in a street race with another vehicle. Stone lost control of
his vehicle near Shady Brook Lane and crossed over into oncoming
traffic, striking another vehicle head-on. Stone suffered fatal injuries
as a result of the accident, while the occupants of the other vehicle
were treated for non-life threatening injuries.
Commentary
My condolences go out to the
family of the victim in this accident. Unfortunately, street racing is
an all too common cause of accidents with our young people. Against my
better judgement, I've read some of the comments in the news feeds. One
in particular stood out at me in which a reader stated this accident was
completely the fault of the deceased young man. I disagree.
I've mentioned in other posts that liability is not an
all-or-nothing entity. In fact, in street racing, it is fairly obvious
it takes two to partake. In other words, the other driver who was racing
could share some of the fault in this accident. Furthermore, anytime a
news feed notes that the driver of a vehicle lost control, it is
imperative that the vehicle be checked for defects or design flaws. In
addition to possibly faulting the other party in the race, there could
be manufacturing problems that led to this accident. All of
that to say, it is very, very rare that an accident, be it 18-wheeler,
automobile, or whatever, is one party's fault. Usually an accident,
especially a fatal accident, is actually the collaboration of multiple
entities.
