Anabel Reid Killed, Others Hurt in One-Vehicle Bus Crash near Ballinger, Texas
According to the Star-Telegram, a student was killed and several others hurt in a single-vehicle bus crash near Ballinger, Texas. The wreck occurred Saturday night, November 5 when the bus driver, 34-year-old Michael Nicodemus lost control of the bus and struck a culvert off U.S. 83, rolling the vehicle once. A student on the bus, Anabel Reid, was pronounced dead at the scene. 15 other passengers on board were taken to several local hospitals, with 4 reported to be in critical condition.
Commentary My thoughts are with the family of the young girl who passed away in this accident. Thankfully others in the bus were only injured in the incident. When an article attributes an accident to a loss of control by the driver, particularly when a school bus is involved, a thorough investigation is needed to dive into the cause of wreck. Vehicles like school buses require serious attention to service, and should undergo regular maintenance by their owner. The investigation would begin its' focus on the maintenance records of the vehicle in question, as a lack of service could have made the bus an accident waiting to happen. Identifying liability like this is not a matter of pursuing a cause of action just for the sake of pursuit, but rather, another party could have played a role in this accident. Indeed, that party may have not been present at the scene of the incident but nonetheless contributed to the wreck.
