When an accident occurs with an 18-wheeler an independent investigation is needed for liability purposes. Due to federal law semi trucks are required to hold insurance policies that can range as much as 10 times a normal automobile policy. Because large amounts of money are on the line defense attorneys are meticulously trained in mitigating payouts when their clients are found at fault. One of the tactics they like to use is the upfront settlement. When liability is determined on their drivers end these attorneys and adjusters will contact a victim or the victims family and offer a settlement in the accident. This will be framed as a goodwill gesture but is actually a sneaky way at lowering a payout as the figure will most certainly be lower that was is deserved and will always preclude any chance of a future suit against the company.
Every move a defense attorney makes in an accident like this will be aimed at the bottom line of their company. Unfortunately these maneuvers almost always compromise a victim and their family with regards to compensation.
