Commentary Most
news sites have not been forthcoming with details of the accident, but I
can certainly say this is a tragedy and should be treated as such.
Before anyone jumps to conclusions regarding the cause of this accident,
a thorough investigation is needed to recreate the scene. A number of
variables exist in accidents like these, and indeed single-vehicle
wrecks can be some of the most difficult to untangle. In many
of my commentaries, I note the need for a separate investigation from
the police report. It's not that I don't think the police do a fine job,
because they do, but they are trained in the here and now. In other
words, their investigation will probably not inspect a brake line for
functionality, to give an example. Police handle the criminal side of
law, and do an excellent job, especially when multi-parties are
involved. But again, other contingencies could exist that may not be
criminal at all, like a tire blowout, to cite another possibility. Any
possibility other than driver error could place fault on a manufacturer
and possibly allow for compensation.
