Katrina Bond Killed in Three-Vehicle Accident in Bellmead, Texas
According to local reports, a woman was killed and a man injured
following a multi-vehicle wreck in Bellmead, Texas. The accident
occurred around midnight Tuesday, September 6 when the 2002 Ford Mustang
of 22-year-old Katrina Bond was struck from behind by a Dodge pick up,
pushing it into an 18-wheeler, killing her on the scene. The driver of
the Dodge, 23-year-old Brenton Leonmont, was injured in the wreck.
Department of Public Safety officials say Leonmont failed to control the
speed of his pickup.
Commentary Interstate 35 can be a very dangerous highway to traverse,
especially at night. An independent investigation is needed to determine
liability and recreate the scenario that caused this tragedy. If the
police reports are accurate and the driver of the pickup truck failed to
maintain his speed on the overpass, he could face fault in a wrongful
death suit. Even on the start-and-stop roadway that is I-35, drivers
have a responsibility to operate in a safe fashion and maintain proper
distance from other vehicles. The magnitude of this rear-ending accident
suggests this responsibility was breached. Additionally, I do
not want to implicate anyone further, but the investigation should
corroborate with the DPS officials to determine if alcohol or other
intoxicants were involved in this accident. Whether it offends anyone or
not, with the Labor Day holiday and the wreck being so near Baylor
University, this is the logical next step in the examination.
Whatever the causal outcome, this is a tragedy that no level
of restitution can repair, but could be made better with a determination
of the relevant facts of the accident and proper damages claims.
