Brandi Blue Killed in Wrong-Way Collision in Northlake, Texas
According to local reports, 21-year-old Michael Devon Napper was involved in a fatal wrong-way car accident in Northlake, Texas, Sunday August 28. The accident occurred around 3:55 a.m. when Napper was traveling the wrong-way along Interstate 35 near the intersection of Highway 114. Napper then collided with a Ford van, carrying 6 passengers, later Napper's pickup struck a Nissan Altima. Napper's passenger, 21-year-old Brandi Blue of Azle was killed at the scene. Napper was taken to John Peter Smith Hospital with undisclosed injuries. The driver of the Ford van and its' passengers, and the Altima driver and its' passengers were all hospitalized.
Commentary Plain and simple, wrong-way driving has got to stop. I continue to fight what I perceive to be one of the causes of this problem. To begin, a third party investigation is needed to determine liability in this matter. Of course if the man was indeed driving the wrong-way, he could assume great liability in wrongful death and personal injury claims, but in my experience these drivers are often operating on some type of intoxicant. The investigation would need to corroborate this, but if Napper was found to be imbibing at a restaurant or bar prior to the accident, there could be a third party added to these claims. This is due to dram shop laws the state of Texas has adopted to hold alcohol-serving establishments partially liable in the event one of their patrons becomes intoxicated and involved in an accident. These laws do not try to take fault away from the driver, but rather identify other parties that could have played a part in an accident. What I mean by "playing a part" is serving someone until they are "knowingly intoxicated" (the standard in Texas). Not only is this illegal but it is incredibly dangerous.

I saw the pickup going the wrong way about a mile or 2 south of the racerway and did everything I could to get the drivers attention. The driver just ignored my efforts and flew by me at what I estimate 80-85 mpg. Sadly I was unable to make a difference.
