Olivia, MN — Some farm equipment jutting out onto a local highway near Olivia last Sunday (September 8, 2013) led to a deadly car accident, killing two people. Thomas Kopel, 76, and his wife, Carla Copel, 74, were both killed when their car struck a farm implement along Highway 71 just south of Olivia.
The accident happened at about 8:40 p.m. on Sunday evening. Thomas Kopel was driving north along Highway 71 near 780th Avenue with Carla,54-year old Allie Cook Jr., and Theresa Cook, 53, as passengers when they came upon a farm implement that was about 2 feet into the northbound lane.
Unable to avoid a wreck, the Kopel’s car crashed into the farm implement and both Carla and Thomas died from the injuries they received in the accident. The other two in the car, Allie and Theresa Cook, were transported to a hospital for unknown injuries and nobody was in the farm implement.
Police are still investigating the matter and have not said if any charges would filed.
