Smyrna, DE — A deadly multi-car accident along Route 1 left one child dead and several other people injured just north of Smyrna on Monday night, August 12, 2013. Police said that 7-year old Bryan Kosc was killed, a 9-year old child was seriously injured, and 6 others were hospitalized after a box truck crashed into a group of vehicles that were slowing down for a construction zone.
The accident happened on 10:15 p.m. on the north side of Smyrna. Police said that a box truck was headed north on Route 1 when it came upon four passenger cars and a van that had slowed down for a construction zone ahead. The box truck did not brake in time and crashed into the group, causing a chain-reaction collision.
Bryan Kosc, 7, and the 9-year old were in the first car and were seriously injured by the accident. After being taken to separate hospitals for treatment, Kosc passed away and the 9-year old remained in serious condition.
6 others were injured in the accident and the box truck driver, identified as 28-year old Bryan Hughes, was unharmed.
The accident is still under investigation.
