47-year-old James Michael Miles is killed in a crane accident in Smithville, TX.
On July 30, 2008 47-year-old James Michael Miles of North Richland Hills, TX. died in a crane accident in Smithville, TX. The accident occurred at a jobsite on the Colorado River where Miles was a part of a team of workers that were dismantling an old bridge. According to witnesses, a piece of the bridge broke free suddenly causing a dramatic weight transfer which toppled the crane. As the crane crashed toward the ground it struck a lifted basket that Miles and another worker were standing in. This resulted in Miles falling approximately 60 feet whereby he landed atop a piece of construction equipment resulting in his immediate death.
Jerry Pew of the greater Dallas area, the other worker in the basket, suffered non-life threatening injuries in the accident. He is being treated at University Medical Center Brackenridge.

James was actually my uncle. We all called him mike. Work had been hard recently but he didnt give up. Although he had an associates degree in business, he loved to get his hands dirty. He was actually going to columbia in another 2 weeks to see his brother get married. Its just now that hes gone, i feel like i should have visited him more. I mean, you see these things on tv, but you never would think they would happen to you. I know im able to cope with it better than most because my father killed himself
