33-year-old Josh Dawe killed in crane accident in Normal, IL
On July 23, 2008 33-year-old Josh Dawe was killed in a crane accident at a job site in Normal, IL. The accident occurred at Wildwood Industries on the corner of North Main and East Kerrick. Reportedly, the boom of the crane collapsed onto an aerial bucket that Dawe was sitting it. Dawe was crushed under the weight of the steel structure.
The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
A note from construction accident attorney E. Michael Grossman:
These types of accidents have occurred far too often in recent history. Crane accidents are on the rise and unless something drastically changes more workers will likely suffer a similar fate. As I mentioned in this article, the current regluations and safety provisions are simply not adequate and civil action is currently the only feasible option for recourse.
I truly hope that this is the last crane accident article I ever have to post but I suspect that there will be many more to come. I wish the best for Mr. Dawe's familiy.

I'm a crane operator by trade (30) years. CCO certified, Union operator. currently a corporate safety director for a major crane rental/steel erection company.I have been an expert witness in several cases. I've seen alot, and I don't care to see anymore deaths related to cranes. The Federal Government needs to get off of their behinds and get on with the new proposed C-DAC standards that have been in the works for 4 years now. Our industry can't continue down this road. I would love to have the opertunity to talk in front of congress about this problem and let them here it from a field person.

I agree I think too many people in the crane & Aerial Lift Industry have their head up their $*% and their $*% burried in the sand so you can't kick em in it. Sadly enough your too late another crane took out a boom lift in Texas yesterday.

What can we do, as citizens, to force safety legislation for these workers? We need to know what we can do. We hear that legislation is stagnated in the decocratic senate, but what can we as citizens do? That is what we need to know...

My son was killed in a crane accident in Houston Texas, 2 iron workers and 2 operators were killed at Lyondel Basell, all the men worked for Deep South crane and rigging. I never knew there was so many crane accidents going on.... Our family is still on mourning. I recently found out that a parent has no recourse even though my son was not married against the employer, so they can continue without worrying about fixing the problems in my case. My heart goes out to all that have suffered from the injustice of not having better standards and regulation for cranes
