Annie Tovar Reyes killed in accident with Dallas PD "bait car"
On June 2, 2008 83-year-old Annie Tovar Reyes was killed in an accident when a stolen Dallas Police Department bait car crashed into her vehicle. A bait car is effectively a car that police officers will leave in a vulnerable spot in order to lure a car thief in to steal the car. Once the thief steals the car the police will attempt to arrest the car.
On Monday night things didn't go according to plan. Police suspect that the driver of the car panicked when he became aware of the situation and he sped up in an attempt to escape. In doing so he sped through a stop sign and crashed in Reyes' vehicle. The thief was taken to the hospital. Reyes died from her injuries.
A note from Attorney E. Michael Grossman:
This is simply appalling. It is my understanding that in these types of operations many other law enforcement agencies will use a vehicle that is equipped with a device that enables police to disable the car remotely to reduce the likelihood of endangering the public. It appears that such a device was not employed thereby creating a dangerous situation that cost an elderly woman her life.
Mrs. Flores' family should strongly consider filing a wrongful death claim. If you or a loved one has suffered as a result of the actions of others call me today. I will not rest until I get your family everything that they deserve.
